Telenor Plans 40% Cut in Carbon Emissions by 2016

Telenor has announced that it plans to reduce the carbon intensity of its global operations with 40 per cent by 2016, compared to the 2007 level. Telenor is expecting continued strong growth in the business and in network traffic, but the total emissions in 2016 will be reduced to equal the already low 2007-level.  more

UNICEF Tests Emergency Comunications Platform

The United Nations agency, UNICEF says that it has successfully tested the first two prototypes of the 'BeeÃ', a mobile communication system developed by the Division of Communication. The Bee will allow communication, connectivity and data access in field conditions where such technologies are often difficult or impossible to use.  more

Asian Bank to Boost Rural GSM Service in Afghanistan

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is to provide a US$55 million loan to the Afghanistan based mobile operator, Roshan so it can extend its coverage to parts of the country that have little or no telecommunications infrastructure in place. The loan to Telecom Development Company Afghanistan, which trades under the name Roshan, will also support the rollout of a mobile banking system called M-Paisa.  more

SOlar Powered GSM Platform Launched - Trials in India

Telecom equipment vendor, VNL has launched a solar powered GSM platform which the company says needs between 50W and 120W of power to operate (compared to 3000 W for a typical GSM base station). A WorldGSM base station is entirely powered by solar energy with a 72 hour battery back-up in place (also charged by solar power).  more

Mobile Network Energy OPEX to Rise Dramatically to $22 Billion in 2013

Over the next few years the growing cost of bulk diesel fuel, coupled with wholesale electricity price increases, are likely to offset significant gains in cellular base station power efficiency. This will result in a collective network OPEX of $22 billion in 2013, according to a new study from ABI Research. Starting in 2012, however, the benefits of power consumption and efficiency advancements should start to rein in the spiraling operating expenditures.  more
