Japanese Operators Planning $10 Billion Spend on LTE Upgrades

121 Million Mobile Users in Japan by 2011

3G now Almost Four-Fifths of Japan's Subscriber Base

softbankÃ's run of market-leading performances for monthly net additions has reached an astounding 16 months, with August the fourth month in a row in which it was the only operator to record a six-figure gain. It did not quite match the level of dominance achieved in June and July, when it took more than half of the total net additions in the market, but the August share of 42.2% was nonetheless impressive. In real terms, softbankÃ's monthly gain was 163.6k, which took its total subscriber base to 19.49m.  more

700 Million Mobile Phones to be NFC Enabled Within 5 Years

A new analysis of the NFC mobile payments opportunity forecasts that 700 million mobile subscribers globally will have phones equipped with NFC contactless technology by 2013. Top 20 Operators in Asia-Pac: Bharti overtakes DoCoMo, India Gains Ground

The mobile markets of the Asia Pacific region continues to grow in importance. In Issue 99, we reported the fact that at the end of September, there were 20 networks in the world with more than 30m customers, of which eight were in this region. Those eight included the two largest - China Mobile and China Unicom - as well as the seventh, eighth, tenth, twelfth, 13th and 20th. Just three months later, there are now 23 networks that have passed the 30m mark and nine of these are now in the AsiaPac region, including four from India. Of the nine, four now have over 50m customers, the other two outside China being Bharti from India and DoCoMo from Japan. Together, the nine have a total of 831m customers, or just under 25% of the global market.  more

Softbank Mobile Gains Most Monthly Users Ever in Feb

TOKYO -(Dow Jones)- softbank's mobile division said Friday it gained a net 228,100 subscribers in February, its biggest monthly gain ever. The Internet conglomerate took control of the smallest of Japan's three main carriers in 2006, after buying Vodafone Group's struggling Japan operations.  more

Japan January 2008 Market Update

Recently published figures from the Japanese telecoms regulator show that the trend established in the latter half of 2007 continued in the first month of 2008, with softbank extending its run of market-leading performances to nine months. In fact, softbank's January figure of 201k new connections represented 59.8% of the total net additions for Japan, the highest percentage it has ever claimed. KDDI's combined au and Tu-Ka offerings added 83k while DoCoMo managed just 20k, lower even than startup 3G operator eMobile, which added 33k.  more

Japanese market now dominated by 3G

Recently released information from the Telecommunications Carriers Association (TCA) of Japan indicates that the total number of mobile customers in Japan stood just short of 100 million at the end of September. The total figure of 99.3 million was equivalent to 5.9% annual growth, with 5.52 million new connections in the twelve months to the end of September. Quarterly net additions totalled 1.28 million, the lowest quarterly figure of this calendar year; this was mainly due to NTT DoCoMo's loss of 22.9k customers in August, a result which produced the lowest total for monthly net additions (324.5k) since October 2006.  more
