Western European Mobile Phone Market now in Recession
Three consecutive quarters of negative growth have led the Western European mobile phone market into recession. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 53.6 million units in 4Q08, 13.5% lower than the 62 million units shipped in 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped 190.5 million units in Western Europe, 5.9% lower than the 202.5 million units shipped in 2007. more

Sales of Smartphones to Reach 300m by 2013
High-end mobile handsets (so-called 'smartphones') are expected to account for a growing proportion of mobile phones sold each year, potentially sustaining the performance of key brands such as Nokia at a time of economic uncertainty. A new report from Juniper Research forecasts that, between 2008 and 2013, annual sales of smartphones will rise by 95% to over 300 million. more

Vodafone Revamps its Mobile Internet Tariffs
Vodafone UK has revamped its mobile internet tariffs and henceforth, contract customers will no longer need to buy an additional internet bundle for £7.50 but instead every plan will automatically include internet access. Customers will get up to 500MB of data traffic per month included with their existing tariffs. more

Bango Publishes Benchmarking Data for Mobile Advertisers
UK based mobile billing firm, Bango published click through and conversion rates from mobile advertising campaigns to help marketers measure the success of their campaigns. Banner and text ads on mobile websites typically have a click through rate of 2-8% with a conversion rate of 2-5% which can be as high as 12% on some networks. This data was collected by Bango customers who use Bango Analytics to measure their mobile marketing campaigns. more
