Hutchison Whampoa Launches Handset Subsidiary
Hutchison Whampoa has launched its own mobile phone subsidiary, INQ Mobile to develop phones for its 3G networks worldwide. The company aims to launch a range of low to mid-priced handsets based largely on free operating systems, likely to be either Linux or the Google backed Android OS - and will be based on Qualcomm chips. more

Majority of US Phone Users Report Surging Mobile Phone Usage
Azuki Systems has published a user survey of US mobile phone users which reports that over 54% of those surveyed said their mobile phone usage had increased by more than 25% over the last two years, and one in five respondents said it had increased by more than 50%. A significant catalyst behind this growth is smart phone adoption, with 62% of respondents indicating they either own or will own such a device in the next 12 months. more

Social Networking has Mixed Success via Mobile Phones
A new survey warns of the importance of keeping social networking sites in perspective, given the hype around interest in the sites such as Facebook and MySpace. The report by Leslie Haddon of the London School of Economics' Media and Communications Department, finds that currently just under a quarter (24%) of internet users ever visit social networking sites (SNS) on mobile phones or smartphones. more
