Smart Phones Ring in Healthy Growth in 2009 Despite Mobile Meltdown

Although the outlook for the overall mobile handset market continues to dim, smart phones remain a bright spot with global unit growth as high as 11.1 percent in 2009, iSuppli is predicting. iSuppli's optimistic forecast for global smart phone unit shipments calls for 192.3 million units in 2009, up 11.1 percent from 173.6 million in 2008. A more pessimistic outlook calls for growth of only 6 percent this year, reaching 183.9 million units.  more

Two-Thirds of Girls Put Off Tech-Jobs Due to Lack of Role Models

Research published by Research In Motion reveals that nearly 90 percent of girls aged 11-16 think using technology is cool and regularly talk to their friends about it. Just over a third (38%) of them chat about the latest technology on a daily basis - anything from social networking to online gaming and mobile downloads. Despite this love of technology, only a quarter (28%) of girls have considered a career in technology compared to more than half (52%) of boys.  more

India to Increase Monitoring of Mobile Phone Records

India's government is to set up a Centre for Communication Security Research and Monitoring to help security agencies intercept mobile phone calls and analyse billing records. The centre will also keep copies of select Call Data Records (CDRs) in a permanent archive, Minister of State for IT and Communication Jyotiraditya Scindia informed Lok Sabha in a written reply.  more
