O2 UK to Offer Free Twitter SMS Updates

O2 UK has announced that it will offer free text message updates for the Twitter service from next month. ­From the start of August, every O2 customer will be able to switch on text notifications within Twitter and receive replies and direct messages completely free. O2 customers will also be able to send updates to Twitter as part of their normal text message bundle or for the cost of a normal text.  more

Vodafone Granted Extra Time to Expand its Qatari Network

Qatar's telecoms regulator, ictQATAR has amended the license recently granted to Vodafone to grant the company an additional six months to achieve national coverage. Under the terms of its license Vodafone Qatar was required to achieve 98% population coverage and launch full services by 1 March 2009. The revised terms require 98% coverage by 1 September 2009 and the launch of services, including two-way phone mobile and sms, by 1 July 2009.  more

Vodafone Offers SMS Access to Twitter in the UK

Fast growing micro-blogging service, Twitter has announced via its own "macro-blog" that Vodafone UK has resumed allowing updates via sms. Anyone in the world can update Twitter via sms but receiving tweets on a mobile phone has been restricted to North America due to the costs of providing the service.  more

New Zealand Regulator Wants Lower Mobile Termination Rates

New Zealand's Commerce Commission has sent letters to the country's three mobile phone networks warning that it wants a reduction in their mobile termination rates. The three networks had sent submissions to the Commission to lower their rates voluntarily, but the Commission has replied saying that the cuts don't go far enough.  more

UK Operators Drop Processing Fees for Charity Premium Text Messages

Bahrain Issues New Instruction for Roaming Mobile Subscribers

Bahrain's telecoms regulator has issued an order to the country's telecoms networks requiring them to offer more information about roaming costs when customers are overseas. As soon as the home network is aware that a customer is roaming overseas, they will be required to send a free sms to their customer with details of the roaming costs for the country they are in.  more

India's RCom - Higher than average usage fails to produce premium ARPU

Reliance Communications has recorded a record quarter, in terms of new connections, adding 5.3m to its base to take the total to 56.0m. Proportionately, it grew by 10.35% over the quarter and 54.3% over the year. These are impressive numbers, but they are also little better than average - the Indian market as a whole grew by 10.03% and 51.2% respectively, while the market leader, Bharti, managed 11.7% and 58.5%.  more
