O2 UK has announced that it will offer free text message updates for the Twitter service from next month. From the start of August, every O2 customer will be able to switch on text notifications within Twitter and receive replies and direct messages completely free. European Parliament Votes to Approve Cuts on Roaming Charges
The European Parliament, in its plenary session in Strasbourg, has voted to approve new rules on sms and mobile data charges when roaming. The Parliament also voted for further cuts in the price of mobile phone calls while roaming in another EU country. The present cap for a mobile phone call made abroad will progressively drop from EUR0.46 to EUR0.35 per minute by July 2011, and from EUR0.22 today to EUR0.11 for mobile calls received while roaming abroad. more

First SMS Worm Detected to Infect Smartphones
Internet security vendor, F-Secure says that it has detected the first known sms based worm for mobile phones. In its quarterly update on the security issues faced by computer and smartphone users, the company noted that the biggest malware story of 2009 so far has been the Conficker (aka Downadup) worm. It is a classic worm exploiting vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows, of the type that has not been seen in the past few years. more

City of London Police Accepting SMS Requests for Help
The police force covering the UK's City of London has launched an sms service, which will allow people in the City to use their mobile phones to contact the police in non-emergency situations. Ad-Supported Messaging Vendor Secures Additional Funding
USA based 4INFO, which offers ad-supported mobile alerts, has secured a further round of funding - raising $20 million in equity and debt funding from all its existing investors and one new investor. Existing investors Peacock Equity - the joint venture between GE Capital's Media, Communications & Entertainment finance business and NBC Universal - and Gannett led the funding, in addition to US Venture Partners, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, and Sand Hill Capital. Joining these existing investment partners is new investor Selby Ventures. more
