Survey Finds Facebook more Popular than SMS - but SMS Used More than Facebook

A smallish survey of 300 consumers in Boston, USA by PR agency, Prompt Communications found that phone calls remain the most common method of communication, with 99% of respondents regularly using the phone to connect with friends and family. Facebook (96%) is now the next most popular communication tool, followed by sms (93%) and email (91%).  more

First SMS Worm Detected to Infect Smartphones

Internet security vendor, F-Secure says that it has detected the first known sms based worm for mobile phones. In its quarterly update on the security issues faced by computer and smartphone users, the company noted that the biggest malware story of 2009 so far has been the Conficker (aka Downadup) worm. It is a classic worm exploiting vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows, of the type that has not been seen in the past few years.  more

Twitter Support for 2-Way SMS Returns to Canada

Bell Canada has announced that Bell Mobility will be the first wireless carrier to resume Canadians full sms support for interacting with the micro-blogging site, Twitter. Last November, Twitter stopped supporting 2-way sms traffic, citing the high costs of sending the replies back to the handsets.  more

What would have been the first major consolidation between two social networking giants has failed to materialise, as Facebook's attempts to woo Twitter with an all-stock offer fell on deaf ears. Facebook's valuation seems to have been the sticking point. But with neither company as yet able to demonstrate that it can make money on a scale that matches its number of users, the outcome might not be a bad thing.  more
