GSM coverage expanded to tallest building
Hong Kong's smartone Mobile says that its GSM coverage has been expanded to cover the interior the city's tallest building, the Two IFC. The building is the third tallest building in the world. Two IFC's mobile network coverage extends to all office floors and public areas including shopping arcades, restaurants, hotel, cinemas, podiums, car parks in basement levels, all lifts, staircases, management office and utility/facility rooms.

Customer care goes cross border in Asia
Hong Kong's smartone has announced its collaboration with China's Guangdong Mobile (part of China Mobile) on extending customer services for all customers travelling between Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong Province. If smartone's Hong Kong and Macau customers lose their SIM cards while roaming in Guangdong Province, they can go to designated Guangdong Mobile's sales and customer service centers for immediate SIM card replacement and resumption of roaming service. more

Mobile operators react to Pneumonia outbreak
Hong Kong's smartone Mobile has ordered all its retail staff to wear masks to help prevent the spread of the Atypical Pneumonia (SARS) infection in Hong Kong. The company has also increased the intensity of their shop's daily cleaning and "sterilization". smartone says that it takes these preventive measures in response to the guidelines issued by the Hong Kong Retail Management Association and in support to the call made by the Health, Welfare and Food Bureau. more

BT sells Hong Kong mobile stake
The BT Group has agreed to sell its 21% stake in Hong Kong's GSM network, smartone for US$132 million. The price works out at US$1.09 per share, and is about a third of the US$3.20 that BT paid for the stake in April 1999. The sale is to Hong Kong's Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) and brings their holding to just under 51%. more

Convergys Corporation has purchased the business and assets of the bankrupt Scottish firm, TelesensKSCL, a subsidiary of TelesensKSCL of Cologne, Germany, from the receivers. Hong Kong network to refund roaming deposits
The Hong Kong based GSM network, smartone has decided to remove the international roaming bar for all its customers, no longer requiring them to request the service before traveling overseas. The company will also be returning all the deposits it has collected from those subscribers who were required to make them before being allowed to make international calls. The decision to refund the deposits will cost smartone a total of US$12.8 million. more
