VoIP provider skype has confirmed speculation and announced that it has launched a skype application for the Apple iPhone, which will be available on the Apple App Store from today. The app also adds skype calling and instant messaging to any second generation iPod touch with a compatible headset and microphone.  more

Western European Mobile Phone Market now in Recession

Three consecutive quarters of negative growth have led the Western European mobile phone market into recession. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 53.6 million units in 4Q08, 13.5% lower than the 62 million units shipped in 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped 190.5 million units in Western Europe, 5.9% lower than the 202.5 million units shipped in 2007.  more

Research predicts partnering explosion as carriers look to third parties

IP telephony firm, Jajah has published a report, which found that traditional carriers are struggling to successfully drive new and innovative services to their customer bases and, concerned about the threat from Internet based competition, are more receptive to partnering to get access to the innovative services they need to remain competitive. The global shift from wireline to wireless is the fuel behind the drive for new services that will help retain revenue.  more
