EU Investigating Mobile Operators Over Blocking of VoIP Services

The European Union is looking at whether blocks on VoIP service by Europe's mobile phone operators might breach competition laws. Two Danish Operators to Support Mobile Barcodes

Danish mobile operator, Sonofon is to start offering canLife 2D barcode platform to its subscribers - joining TSC which has already launched the service for its customers. Scanbuy, which developed the service says that it can now reach 80% of Denmark's mobile subscriber base.  more

Hutchison Whampoa Launches Handset Subsidiary

Hutchison Whampoa has launched its own mobile phone subsidiary, INQ Mobile to develop phones for its 3G networks worldwide. The company aims to launch a range of low to mid-priced handsets based largely on free operating systems, likely to be either Linux or the Google backed Android OS - and will be based on Qualcomm chips.  more

Verizon FiOS Repeats as Most Competitive Telecom Provider in 2008

The wRatings Corporation, an independent competitive research firm, announced today the results of the annual Most Competitive Media & Telecom Study, which was sponsored by software house, SAP. In the report, Verizon FiOS repeats as No. 1 for Telecom Providers with a W Score of 73.0. Two business segments of Google, their Shopping/Services and their Search engine, rank as the No. 1 and 2 Media Properties with W Scores of 88.8 and 88.2 respectively. A W Score of 100 means the business built the highest consumer and economic advantages when compared with the 540+ companies in the wRatings national coverage.  more

Mobile WiMAX Trials Completed in Finland

The first Mobile WiMAX field testing in Finland has been carried out in Savonlinna. Part of a larger Mobile WiMAX technology study initiated by ten Finnish broadband operators, the field test was run by local telephone company SPY and consultancy company Omnitele in collaboration with network company Daimler Finland. The equipment used in the field tests were AlvarionÃ's 4Motion solution with its IEEE 802.16e compliant BreezeMax as radio access network platform.  more
