Half billion share buyback in South Korea
South Koreas, SK Telecom has paid US$513 million in a share buyback equivalent to 3% of itself from Korea Telecom. SK Telecom has previously said that it will spend around US$1 billion on a share buyback over the next three years, and Korea Telecom has said that it plans to sell 4% of SK Telecom this year. Korea Telecom currently holds 13.4% of SK Telecom. more

Qualcomm sets up South Korea investment fund
Qualcomm and South Korea Telecom have announced an initiative to jointly invest in venture startup companies engaged in the development and commercialization of new CDMA based applications and services. Qualcomm and SK Telecom are each committing $5 million to the initiative. South Korea delay in 3G rollout
The Chief Executive of South Korea's SK Telecom has told reporters that the company may have to delay the rollout of its WCDMA based 3G network. The original launch of May 2002 may be delayed by as much as a year due to problems with infrastructure and handset supplied. Korea Telecom is still on track to launch its WCDMA network in the main cities by May 2002. more

South Korea moves to offer cdma2000 incentives
The South Korean Ministry of Information and Communications has announced that companies that belong to the consortium lead by SK Telecom and Korea Telecom, which won a W-CDMA license will be allowed to also bid for a cdma2000 license next month. SK Telecom and Korea Telecom themselves will not be allowed to bid for the third 3G license. The Ministry said it will allow all content providers, telecommunications equipment makers and other companies which belong to the Korea Telecom and SK Telecom consortia to re-bid for the coming auction by forming grand consortia. The ministry added that it will also offer financial incentives to the winning consortium to use cdma2000. more

South Korea awards two of its three 3G licenses
The South Korean Ministry of Information and Communication has announced that SK Telecom and Korea Telecom have both been granted 3G licenses based on W-CDMA. Hanaro Telecom and LG Telecom have both been disqualified from the license procedure. The ministry said that it plans to also award a CDMA2000 based 3G license in February next year, although Hanaro Telecom was the only company that had expressed any interest in operating a CDMA2000 system." more
