China Unicom Buys Back South Korean Stake for $1.3 Billion

­South Korea's SK Telecom has sold its 3.8 percent stake in China Unicom back to the Chinese mobile network operator for US$1.3 billion, the Chinese company has announced. The move comes shortly after Spain's Telefonica agreed to a mutual shareholder agreement with Unicom which saw it increase its holding in the Chinese company.  more

Telefonica Looking to Increase Chinese Investment

Telefonica has not ruled out increasing its investment in China Netcom Group in order to boost its holding in the future China Unicom network operator. Spain's Telefonica currently owns 5 percent of China Netcom Group, which has been ordered by the government to merge with China Unicom. The agreement would dilute Telefonica's stake in the enlarged group so the company plans to increase its investment to maintain a 10 percent holding in the group, chairman Cesar Alierta told the Financial Times.  more

SK Telecom CEO Expects Further Opening of Chinese Market

SK Telecom's CEO Kim Shin-Bae appeared on a special live broadcast hosted by China's CCTV in commemoration of China's fifth anniversary in its entry into the WTO. Through his speech, he revealed his expectations about the additional opening of China's telecom market, saying that it would lead to increased competitiveness of Chinese telecom operators due to investments and competition. He also added that SK Telecom would pursue globalization together with Korean and Chinese IT companies, playing the role of a bridge for cooperation of the telecom sectors of the two countries. more
