GSM coverage coming to the sea lanes
ip.access says it has signed a product licence agreement with the Ireland-based Altobridge that will offer pioneering new GSM voice and data services to the aviation and shipping industries. The satellite-based solution joins Altobridge's end-to-end GSM gateway with ip.access' nanoBTS picocellular basestation to provide seamless GSM services on board aircraft and ships. The first prototype is due to be launched in the first quarter of 2004. more

A new service has been a launched that will enable airline passengers to send SMS's from their plane seat. Now commercially available and enabled on both MAS and MORS/Rockwell-Collins IFE systems, sita's Aircom SMS service is generating interest from airlines worldwide wanting to offer their passengers the option to send and receive SMS text messages while in flight. sita is currently working with several airlines to introduce the two-way SMS/email by the end of 2003 and hopes to soon announce the launch customer. more
