Russian backed Indian mobile network operator, sistema Shyam Teleservices (SSTL) has launched its CDMA network Tamil Nadu, Chennai and Pondicherry, under the MTS brand. The company outlined plans for a US$5 billion investment over the next five years, and expects to list on the local stock-exchange by the end of next year. more

India Added 13.44 Million Mobile Subscribers in February
India's telecoms regulator has published the connection figures for February, noting that a total of 13.42 million telephone connections (Wireline and Wireless) have been added during February 2009 as compared to 15.26 million connections added in January 2009. more

MTS Confirms Interest in Taking Stake in Russian Mobile Phone Retailer

Indian Government Investigates Russian Investment in Shyam Telelink
India's Finance Ministry has issued a "show clause" notice on Shyam Telelink after Russia's sistema recently increased its holding in the company to 73.97% without seeking government approval. The government has a mandatory cap of 75% for foreign ownership, but has to approve any investments above 49%, as Vodafone found when it took control of Vodafone Essar. more

India's GSM Operators Lose Legal Battle Against CDMA Firms
India's High Court in Delhi has rejected a petition by the GSM network operators to block the government from allowing the incumbent CDMA operators from offering GSM services.
