Austria Tests New NFC Based Mobile Ticketing Service
Mobilkom austria says that it has developed an NFC service in cooperation with the Austrian railway operator, ÖBB for mobile ticketing in pre-selling conditions. The new chip-based NFC application is based on the interoperable international standard VDV-KA (Association of German Transport Undertakings - Core Application) and has been integrated into the mobilkom austria mobile ticketing platform. more

Bahrain Issues New Instruction for Roaming Mobile Subscribers
Bahrain's telecoms regulator has issued an order to the country's telecoms networks requiring them to offer more information about roaming costs when customers are overseas. As soon as the home network is aware that a customer is roaming overseas, they will be required to send a free SMS to their customer with details of the roaming costs for the country they are in. more

Turkcell Launches New Applications with Mobile Signature Solution
Turkish mobile operator, Turkcell has rolled out a new series of electronic signature based services, based on a SIM card supplied by Gemalto. The Gemalto solution allows subscribers to securely access online services that require strong authentication using their mobile phone to sign their transactions and documents by means of a legally binding electronic signature. Eighteen months after the initial deployment, the operator is working with 12 partner banks, 4 investment companies, 6 governmental organizations and 2 e-commerce websites. more

Mobile penetration rates are forecast to rise from 46% in 2008 to 95% by 2013 according to a new survey of 34 emerging market countries published by Tariff Consultancy. Already subscribers in the 34 countries total over 2.1 billion users (based on operator statistics as of mid-2008) which accounts for half of the world's mobile users (based on ITU estimates). By 2013 the 34 countries will have grown to 4.3 billion mobile users and will account for around two thirds of global mobile users more

Credit card firm, Visa has launched four new programs to deliver payments and services via mobile phones. Two commercial mobile payments programs, in Brazil and Korea, along with two mobile offers and transaction notification pilots in the United States, add to more than a dozen pilot and commercial programs enabled by the Visa mobile platform around the world. more

Stable growth of the mobile telephony market in Russia
A new report by the PMR research and consulting company, demonstrates that the value of the telecommunication market in Russia grew by 27% in 2007, achieving the level of RUB 957 billion (US$39.5 billion). The data transmission and internet services sectors grew dynamically, but the market growth was caused primarily by very high dynamics of the largest sector: mobile telephony. In the last eight years, the market developed at an average annual rate of approximately 31%, primarily thanks to dynamic development of the mobile telephony market resulting from a low saturation of services. more
