SIM Card Market Defying the Downturn
The latest data from IMS Research shows that the SIM card market continues to defy the economic downturn that is currently hitting the mobile market. Total shipments of SIM cards in 2008 grew to reach the record number of 3.07 billion. This is in marked contrast to the numbers from manufacturers which showed handset shipments declining sharply in the second half of the year. more

Just Under 3 Billion SIM Cards Shipped in 2008
SIMalliance, the global association of SIM card manufacturers has reported that global SIM card shipments exceeded 2.9 billion units during 2008, with strong demand from the emerging markets of India, China, Asia Pacific and Latin America contributing to a 29 per cent increase on shipments over the previous year. more

Toshiba Moves into NFC Capable SIM Market
Toshiba has announced the development of a SIM card for use within mobile phones supporting NFC (Near Field Communication) services - which it expects to start sampling from Q3 this year. Toshiba's newly developed USIM card meets the latest specifications of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute-Smart Card Platform (ETSI SCP) and the GSM Association (GSMA). It is also compatible with the GSMA's Pay-Buy-Mobile programme, and offers full support for mobile contactless services, and meets all the security levels required for international payment applications. more

Visa Expands Mobile Payments Services
Credit card firm, Visa has launched four new programs to deliver payments and services via mobile phones. Two commercial mobile payments programs, in Brazil and Korea, along with two mobile offers and transaction notification pilots in the United States, add to more than a dozen pilot and commercial programs enabled by the Visa mobile platform around the world. more

Ebtikar Card Systems Launches 1GB SIM Card
Ebtikar Card Systems, a part of Etisalat Services Holding and a regional provider of Smart Card solutions has shown off its latest SIM card - which includes 1GB of memory. Ebtikar's team presented several scenarios where local operators can increase revenues from SIM sales. MegaSIMs can store large files including complicated or localized software such as directory enquiry services, and allow them to be sold simultaneously with the operator's welcome pack. They said that this not only reduces the complexity for the consumer, but also increases the chances they will subscriber or use other value added services such as Mobile TV or Financial Remittance services. more
