Tanzania to Require SIM Registration
Tanzania's government has joined the growing trend for countries to require all PrePay SIM cards to be registered with the network operators, citing the usual reasons of crime and terrorism. The Minister for Communication, Science and Technology, Prof. Peter Msolla, said the government would soon table a bill in the National Assembly for the establishment of a Central Equipment Identification Register (CEIR). more

Singapore Network Offers PrePay Mobile Data for Visitors
Singapore's MobileOne (M1) has launched a PrePay mobile data tariff which aimed directly at travelers to the country. The network operator said that the new service will provide a cheaper alternative to the broadband connection services provided at most hotels. Pakistan to Increase Penalty for Handling Stolen Mobile Phones
Pakistan's telecoms regulator has asked the government to pass a new law and permit imprisonment for up to 49 years for handling stolen mobile phones. Bahrain to Require Registration for All Prepay Subscribers
Bahrain's telecoms regulator has announced that all mobile phones will have to be registered by the end of the year, with owners taking proof of identity to their local retailers to prove who they are. Unlike most countries which have required registration of mobile phones ostensibly to clamp down on claims of terrorist activity, Bahrain's regulator, the TRA says that its biggest problem are hoax calls to the emergency services and general nuisance calls. more

Ikea to Launch SIM Only MVNO in the UK
The UK arm of flat-pack home furnishing chain, Ikea is launching a SIM only MVNO service, powered by the T-Mobile network. Under the agreement with Mobile Partners UK, T-Mobile is providing Ikea with prepay services that will be available to Ikea Family loyalty programme members in the UK. Currently there are 1.4 million members in the UK with new registrations growing daily. more

Georgia Fines Russian Operator for "Illegal Activities"
