Indonesia's XL Loses 1 Million Customers

Nokia Shows Off 3rd NFC Capable Mobile Phone

Nokia has shown off its third fully integrated Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile phone, the Nokia 6216 classic. The new arrival is Nokia's first SIM-based NFC device which enables operators to build NFC services on to the SIM card. The Nokia 6216 classic is expected to start shipping in the third quarter of 2009 in select markets with an estimated retail price of EUR 150 before taxes and subsidies.  more

Telenor Offers Banking Security via Mobile Phones

Norwegian operator, Telenor has announced that BankID for mobile phones is now available. This is an electronic identification and signature solution where the security elements are saved on the SIM card of the mobile phone. This will make banking and payment services available to Norwegians no matter where they are in the world.  more

T-Mobile UK Facing $895 Million Lawsuit

A long running court case is to proceed after solicitors filed a case with the UK's High Court against T-Mobile which could potentially cost the network operator £625 million (US$895 million). The lawsuit is being filed by now-bankrupt SIM care reseller, VIP Communications.  more

Visa Works with GSMA to Extend Access to Mobile Financial Services

Credit card merchant, Visa has announced plans to work with the GSM Association to advance the delivery of mobile financial services around the world. As part of the continuing collaboration between the two organizations, the GSMA has selected Visa as a provider for mobile money transfer solutions globally, and is working to execute an agreement to formalize participation terms.  more

Toshiba Moves into NFC Capable SIM Market

Toshiba has announced the development of a SIM card for use within mobile phones supporting NFC (Near Field Communication) services - which it expects to start sampling from Q3 this year. Toshiba's newly developed USIM card meets the latest specifications of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute-Smart Card Platform (ETSI SCP) and the GSM Association (GSMA). It is also compatible with the GSMA's Pay-Buy-Mobile programme, and offers full support for mobile contactless services, and meets all the security levels required for international payment applications.  more

Emerging Markets Mobile Penetration to Rrise from 46% in 2008 to 95% by 2013

Mobile penetration rates are forecast to rise from 46% in 2008 to 95% by 2013 according to a new survey of 34 emerging market countries published by Tariff Consultancy. Already subscribers in the 34 countries total over 2.1 billion users (based on operator statistics as of mid-2008) which accounts for half of the worldÃ's mobile users (based on ITU estimates). By 2013 the 34 countries will have grown to 4.3 billion mobile users and will account for around two thirds of global mobile users  more
