Nokia Shows Off 3rd NFC Capable Mobile Phone

Nokia has shown off its third fully integrated Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile phone, the Nokia 6216 classic. The new arrival is Nokia's first SIM-based NFC device which enables operators to build NFC services on to the SIM card. The Nokia 6216 classic is expected to start shipping in the third quarter of 2009 in select markets with an estimated retail price of EUR 150 before taxes and subsidies.  more

T-Mobile UK Facing $895 Million Lawsuit

A long running court case is to proceed after solicitors filed a case with the UK's High Court against T-Mobile which could potentially cost the network operator £625 million (US$895 million). The lawsuit is being filed by now-bankrupt SIM care reseller, VIP Communications.  more

Toshiba Moves into NFC Capable SIM Market

Toshiba has announced the development of a SIM card for use within mobile phones supporting NFC (Near Field Communication) services - which it expects to start sampling from Q3 this year. Toshiba's newly developed USIM card meets the latest specifications of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute-Smart Card Platform (ETSI SCP) and the GSM Association (GSMA). It is also compatible with the GSMA's Pay-Buy-Mobile programme, and offers full support for mobile contactless services, and meets all the security levels required for international payment applications.  more

NFC Implementation in Handsets on the Right Track with SWP but Delays Still Expected

The chicken and egg scenario that has bogged down the embryonic NFC market has taken steps forward in recent weeks. The mobile operatorsÃ' preference for the Single Wire Protocol (SWP) form for NFC implementation received official endorsement from the GSM Association last month. This followed the final ratification of the standard and a signing of a memorandum of understanding with EMVCo. in September. Now some industry insiders are expecting large volume shipments of NFC handsets in the second half of 2009.  more

T-Mobile facing $1.25 Billion Legal Action For Blocking GSM Gateways

T-Mobile UK is facing a potential £625 million (US$1.25 billion) lawsuit for damages from a former reseller of SIM cards, VIP Communications. The claim is based on a report which VIP Communications says was prepared by T-Mobile internal staff to calculate the economic impact of VIP Communications' business model - valued at some £57 million per year.  more

Global Mobile Phone Subscribers to Reach 4.5 Billion by 2012

According to MIC (Market Intelligence Center), an ICT industry research institute based in Taipei, global mobile phone subscribers hit 3.1 billion in 2007, thanks mainly to the continuing increase of prepaid subscribers with double SIM cards and corporate clients in the US and European markets. With the global mobile phone penetration rate reaching approximately half of the global population, growth momentum of global subscribers is expected to slow down after 2008.  more

Roamware Launches Updated Roaming Software

Roamware says that it has released a new version of its roaming traffic redirection software. Roamware's TR 6.0 solution enables real-time steering of outbound roaming traffic to preferred roaming networks in the visited locations. TR 6.0 does this by steering customers to networks that support the services to which the roamer has subscribed, including CAMEL (prepaid roaming), GPRS, MMS and the virtual home environment.  more

GSM Association Aims for Global Point of Sale Purchases by Mobile Phone

The worldwide use of mobile phones for payments at point of sale is the aim of a new initiative announced by the GSM Association (GSMA), the global trade organization for mobile operators. The 'Pay-Buy Mobile' initiative is a natural progression for the industry, following the GSMA's program - announced last year - to define a common global approach to enabling Near Field Communications (NFC), the technology used to link mobile devices with payment and contactless systems. more
