SIMalliance, the global association of SIM card manufacturers has reported that global SIM card shipments exceeded 2.9 billion units during 2008, with strong demand from the emerging markets of India, China, Asia Pacific and Latin America contributing to a 29 per cent increase on shipments over the previous year. more

Gemalto to Embed Windows Live Messenger in SIM Cards
Microsoft and smart-card vendor, Gemalto have announced they are collaborating to offer Windows Live Messenger services to the mass market of mobile subscribers through a new Windows Live Messenger client application that comes pre-installed on phone Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards. The Gemalto application, named SIMessenger, is the world's first Microsoft-certified instant messaging SIM client solution. more

Turkcell Launches New Applications with Mobile Signature Solution
Turkish mobile operator, Turkcell has rolled out a new series of electronic signature based services, based on a SIM card supplied by Gemalto. The Gemalto solution allows subscribers to securely access online services that require strong authentication using their mobile phone to sign their transactions and documents by means of a legally binding electronic signature. Smartcard manufacturer, Gemalto says that it has been selected by China Mobile for its multi-site deployment of Gemalto FullMultimedia SIM cards. The project is taking place in the Guangdong, Shanxi, Beijing, Jiangsu and Shanghai provinces and is the first large-scale multimedia SIM commercial deployment in Asia. more
