Nokia Shows Off 3rd NFC Capable Mobile Phone
Nokia has shown off its third fully integrated Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile phone, the Nokia 6216 classic. The new arrival is Nokia's first SIM-based NFC device which enables operators to build NFC services on to the SIM card. The Nokia 6216 classic is expected to start shipping in the third quarter of 2009 in select markets with an estimated retail price of EUR 150 before taxes and subsidies. more

30 Million Handsets Could Be Shut-Down in India by Mid-April
India's mobile phone networks have agreed to an aggressive 10-day deadline to disconnect all mobile phones which either do not have a unique IMEI serial number, or use Chinese style blank IMEIs. The regulator ordered the clampdown citing security concerns following recent terrorist attacks in the country. more

Telenor Moves Grameenphone CEO Over to Hungarian Subsidiary
Telenor has shuffled its management, and is moving Mr. Anders Jensen from running its part-owned Bangladeshi subsidiary, Grameenphone to take over at Hungary's Pannon from the beginning of April. He will succeed Mr. Ove Fredheim, who is leaving to take up another posting within the Telenor Group in Norway. more

Visa Works with GSMA to Extend Access to Mobile Financial Services
Credit card merchant, Visa has announced plans to work with the GSM Association to advance the delivery of mobile financial services around the world. As part of the continuing collaboration between the two organizations, the GSMA has selected Visa as a provider for mobile money transfer solutions globally, and is working to execute an agreement to formalize participation terms. more

Sagem to Embed GPS Receiver into SIM Cards
Smartcard vendor, Sagem Orga has announced a partnership with BlueSky Positioning to integrate A-GPS positioning technology on to conventional SIM cards. Sagem Orga and BlueSky Positioning's new approach incorporates a GPS receiver and a proprietary antenna into the SIM card, enabling mobile operators to deploy applications with no need for software or hardware changes. more

Putting a GPS Chip Inside a SIM Card
Start-up company BlueSky Positioning says that it has managed to fit a GPS receiver and proprietary antenna inside a SIM card. This would enable network operators to launch location based services without either relying on network intensive cell-positioning, or requiring customers to upgrade to a GPS capable handset. more

European Study into Roaming Patterns
A report from the European Commission's EuroBarometer finds that mobile phone users rely very heavily on international roaming services, since nine out of ten users opt for that formula when travelling abroad, compared with a very small minority who prefer to buy a new SIM card in the country they are visiting. more
