Austria Tests New NFC Based Mobile Ticketing Service
Mobilkom austria says that it has developed an NFC service in cooperation with the Austrian railway operator, ÖBB for mobile ticketing in pre-selling conditions. The new chip-based NFC application is based on the interoperable international standard VDV-KA (Association of German Transport Undertakings - Core Application) and has been integrated into the mobilkom austria mobile ticketing platform. more

Putting a GPS Chip Inside a SIM Card
Start-up company BlueSky Positioning says that it has managed to fit a GPS receiver and proprietary antenna inside a SIM card. This would enable network operators to launch location based services without either relying on network intensive cell-positioning, or requiring customers to upgrade to a GPS capable handset. more

New Phone Has Rollaway 5-Inch Screen
Telecom Italia and Polymer Vision have announced an agreement which will see the two companies launching the world's first rollable display enabled mobile device to market in 2007. The device uses a Polymer Vision rollable display technology which enables mobile devices to incorporate a display larger than the handset itself and offers a readability similar to printed paper. The product follows up on the rollable display technology based concept device Readius shown off by Polymer Vision less than 18 months ago. more

A new application has been developed for mobile phones that would cause them to release an ear-piercing screech if stolen. From today robbers who steal mobile phones set up with Remote XT will have a shock when they try to sell the phones on the black market. Phones are instantly disabled - even if thieves remove the SIM card - and let out an ear-piercing screech, which can only be stopped if the battery is removed. more
