Germany to Require Active SIM Card to Make Emergency Calls

SIM Card Market Defying the Downturn
The latest data from IMS Research shows that the SIM card market continues to defy the economic downturn that is currently hitting the mobile market. Total shipments of SIM cards in 2008 grew to reach the record number of 3.07 billion. This is in marked contrast to the numbers from manufacturers which showed handset shipments declining sharply in the second half of the year. more

Nokia Shows Off 3rd NFC Capable Mobile Phone
Nokia has shown off its third fully integrated Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile phone, the Nokia 6216 classic. The new arrival is Nokia's first SIM-based NFC device which enables operators to build NFC services on to the SIM card. Tanzania to Require SIM Registration
Tanzania's government has joined the growing trend for countries to require all PrePay SIM cards to be registered with the network operators, citing the usual reasons of crime and terrorism. The Minister for Communication, Science and Technology, Prof. Peter Msolla, said the government would soon table a bill in the National Assembly for the establishment of a Central Equipment Identification Register (CEIR). more

SIMalliance, the global association of SIM card manufacturers has reported that global SIM card shipments exceeded 2.9 billion units during 2008, with strong demand from the emerging markets of India, China, Asia Pacific and Latin America contributing to a 29 per cent increase on shipments over the previous year. more
