Rich Communication Suite Initiative Gains Momentum
The GSMA has reported significant progress in the Rich Communication Suite (RCS) Initiative, a service providing enriched communication capabilities such as in-call multimedia sharing, conversational messaging and presence-enhanced contact management, all accessible through a user's mobile phone contact list. The initiative has generated considerable momentum across a number of fronts since the GSMA brought RCS into its work programme in September 2008, including the delivery of the RCS Release 1 specification, the addition of new programme participants and the successful completion of interoperability tests. more

Carriers name Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson and Nokia Siemens top IMS vendors
A new study by Infonetics Research that provides an in-depth view of service provider thinking and plans for IMS equipment and services, including service provider perceptions of leading IMS vendors, names Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, and Nokia siemens as the "top IMS equipment manufacturers." According to the study, roughly 3/4 plan to offer fixed VoIP over IMS by April 2009. more

Nortel, Nokia Siemens neck and neck in media gateway/softswitch market in 1Q08
A new report from communications market research firm Infonetics Research shows that worldwide next gen voice equipment sales totaled $985 million in 1Q08, down 12% from the previous quarter, but up 17% from a year ago. The healthy year-over-year increase indicates service providers continue to invest in VoIP equipment as part of their long term migration from circuit switched to packet telephony, says the report. more

Nokia Siemens Wins Optical Backbone Contract in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Bosnia and Herzegovina's BH Telecom has awarded a contract to Nokia siemens Networks for a fibre optic network which includes Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology. Nokia siemens Networks' DWDM network based on the SURPASS hiT 7300 platform will provide BH Telecom with a transport backbone, anticipating the future transmission volumes from the emerging data traffic. more
