Zain successfully trials HSPA+ in a live 3G network
Zain Saudi Arabia has concluded trials of a Nokia siemens Networks supplied Internet-HSPA (I-HSPA) software upgrade within Zain's existing radio access network. The trial introduced a simple, flat architecture demonstrating how traffic can bypass the Radio Network Controller (RNC) and the Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN), to deliver improved data transmission speeds. Because of the re-routing, there is no need to build in additional capacity, in effect reducing the OPEX and CAPEX. more

Henan Mobile Conducts China's first Direct Tunnel trial

New Technology Could Double 3G Network Voice Call Capacity
Finnish operator Elisa and Nokia siemens Networks have demonstrated a new technology that allows operators to increase voice capacity of their 3G networks, potentially up to double the baseline capacity. The trial call was conducted in Elisa's live 3G network using R&D prototype devices supplied by Nokia. In technical terms the demonstration was of the world's first circuit switched call over a high speed packet access network (CSoHSPA). more

Ixia Offers to Buy Catapult Communications
Wireless testing systems vendor, Catapult Communications has agreed to a buy-out by fellow test systems vendor, Ixia for around US$105 million. The purchase price represents a 39% premium to the average share price over the past three months. more

Market research firm Infonetics Research is reporting that telecom carriers spent US$62 billion on outsourced services in 2008, and have plans to increase that spending. The report noted that the top revenue-generating tasks outsourced by service providers in 2008 include network maintenance, application service delivery, network build, and network planning and design. more

Moody's changes outlook for Nokia' A1 rating to negative
Moody's has changed its outlook on Nokia's ratings to negative, from stable - although it affirmed the A1 ratings for Nokia's senior debt and the Prime-1 for short-term debt. The outlook change was triggered by Nokia's results for the first quarter 2009, which confirmed a double-digit rate of decline for the mobile phone market in units and a one third year over year revenue reduction for Nokia in this segment and it disclosed increasing earnings pressure in the Nokia siemens Networks business. more
