Smart Mobile Device Shipments Jump 53% to 118 Million in 2007

The latest market data from analyst firm Canalys shows how much the converged device market (all smart phones and wireless handhelds) has grown over the past year. These, typically high-end, devices represented around 10% of the global mobile phone market by units in 2007, with annual growth of 60% making them one of the fastest growing segments of the technology industry. Year-on-year growth climbed every quarter throughout 2007, to reach a peak of 72% in Q4.  more

20.4m Symbian smartphones shipped in Q3 2007

Smartphone OS vendor, Symbian has announced that during Q3 of this year, the company shipped 20.4 million smartphone licenses, bringing its total to 165 million licenses since the company was formed. 15 new Symbian enabled smartphones models commenced shipment in Q3 2007, bringing the total number of models in the market at the end of Q3 2007 to 134 phones.  more

Motorola Sales Slump Pushes Sharp Down the Mobile Screen Shipments Rankings

The mobile phone display segment was shaken by a 36% Q/Q and 41% Y/Y drop in Motorola's mobile phone main display purchases down from 50M last quarter to 32M shipments. The plunge, in turn, caused a 21% drop in sharp's display shipments - lowering sharp from #1 to the #3 position in mobile phone display shipments. Other Q2'07 events included Samsung SDI regaining the #1 position in mobile phone display shipments in Q2'07 with 37 million units shipped, and Nokia increasing its lead in mobile phone handset purchases, of 100 million units - up 11% Q/Q and 18% Y/Y.  more

Phone Main Display Shipments Up Nearly a Third Year-on-Year

DisplaySearch has released its Quarterly Mobile Phone Shipment and Forecast report, which revealed shipments of 275.3 million main displays and 60.7 million sub-displays for mobile phone handset screens. Active Matrix displays are now more than 53.7% of the total shipments, up from 41.7% a year ago. This trend is expected to continue, and by Q4'06, the Active Matrix share is forecast to be up to 60.4%. Color displays now represent 84.5% of the total.
