A Fatwa Against Ringtones

An imam at a Mosque in Saudi Arabia issued a fatwa against mobile phones after one rang during prayers on Saturday. A report in the local newspaper, Al-Watan said that the imam had begun the Taraweeh prayer (Taraweeh is an Arabic phrase referring to extra prayers given by Sunnis at night in the Islamic month of Ramadan) when the sound of Arabic pop music began playing from the audience. more

In the UAE, a woman has been divorced by a SMS message. A 26 year old woman in Dubai was sent a SMS by her husband asking why she was late, and telling her she was divorced. In this open minded country, marriage is still governed by sharia Law, which says that a divorce can be granted if the husband asks for it, and the wife receives the message. As the cellular network was able to show that the message had been received by the wife's cell phone, the local court annulled the marriage, although the couple are now reconciled again." more
