Bouygues Telecom Loses 3G License Appeal

The European Court of Justice has ruled that the French government was correct in retrospectively lowering the 3G license fees it charged to France Telecom and Vivendi's sfr. In 2000, the French government sold two 3G licenses to France Telecom and sfr for EUR4.95 billion each. A later attempt in 2002 to sell the remaining two licenses raised just EUR619 million from Bouygues Telecom. The fourth license remains unsold to this day.  more

Who are the Top 20 European Network Operators?

The European mobile market is gradually becoming more democratic, with virtually every market seeing penetration levels of 100% or more. In this environment, there are few changes and the list of the largest operators reflects this. Only one company has entered this list over the last quarter and, in all, there have only been two changes in position. T-Mobile Germany has overtaken Turkcell, to regain the second spot in Europe, behind TIM of Italy, while Polkomtel of Poland has nudged its compatriot PTC out of the top 20, by a margin of less than 0.25m. more

Europe Top Ten Mobile Operators - Rankings

In Q3 2006, Ukrainian operator Kyivstar broke into the top 10 of Europe's largest mobile operators, claiming ninth place at the end of September, ahead of France's sfr. Fourth quarter figures now show that by the end of December, Kyivstar had moved up another two places to seventh, whilst domestic rival UMC joined it in the top 10, occupying its former ninth place and ousting sfr from the ranking altogether. more
