Total wireless subscribers in France to reach 65.9 million in 2013
Orange France is predicted to increase not only its market share in its home market, but also its monthly ARPU levels over the next few years. Canada based IE Market Research Corp. (IEMR) is also expecting that sfr will see its subscriber market share decline from 34.2% in 2008 to 33.9% in 2013, while Bouygues Telecom's share of subscribers will remain stable over the next several years at approximately 16.6%. more

Bouygues Telecom Loses 3G License Appeal
The European Court of Justice has ruled that the French government was correct in retrospectively lowering the 3G license fees it charged to France Telecom and Vivendi's sfr. In 2000, the French government sold two 3G licenses to France Telecom and sfr for EUR4.95 billion each. A later attempt in 2002 to sell the remaining two licenses raised just EUR619 million from Bouygues Telecom. The fourth license remains unsold to this day. more

Bouygues Telecom - Management Believes Financial Crisis Won't Hit Firm

Rich Communication Suite Initiative Gains Momentum
The GSMA has reported significant progress in the Rich Communication Suite (RCS) Initiative, a service providing enriched communication capabilities such as in-call multimedia sharing, conversational messaging and presence-enhanced contact management, all accessible through a user's mobile phone contact list. The initiative has generated considerable momentum across a number of fronts since the GSMA brought RCS into its work programme in September 2008, including the delivery of the RCS Release 1 specification, the addition of new programme participants and the successful completion of interoperability tests. more

France Bans Exclusive Apple iPhone Deal with Orange
The French Competition Council has ordered Apple and its local exclusive operator, Orange to stop blocking sales of the iPhone to customers who want to use rival operators. The Council said that the changes are provisional, but have to come into effect from tomorrow (Thursday) and hence will enable sfr and Bouygues Telecom to offer the iPhone in time for Christmas - providing they can get deliveries of the handset. more

A court advisor to the European Union's Court of Justice has recommended that the EU Court had been correct in dismissing a complaint by French mobile operator, Bouygues that the allocation of 3G licenses was incorrectly carried out. more

Europe's Top Ten Networks - All Now Over 20m Customers
In Issue 98 of the Mobile World Briefing, when last reviewing the European market, we suggested that "if the normal seasonal pattern is repeated in Q4, then the final period of the year should see something between 25-30m new connections, enough to take penetration up to 110%". We mention this, because the normal seasonal pattern was repeated, we did see 25m new connections across the region and penetration is now standing at exactly 110%. more

French Operators Authorised to Offer 3G at 900Mhz
French telecoms regulator, Arcep has approved applications by Orange and sfr to offer 3G services in the 900Mhz. Third 3G license holder, Bouygues Telecom says that it will apply for an amendment to its license to reuse its 900Mhz spectrum in 2009. more
