Alaska Airlines Trials Satellite-Based Inflight Wireless Internet Service

Alaska Airlines says that it has launched a customer trial of its new satellite-based wireless Internet service. Onboard Alaska Airlines' specially-equipped Boeing 737-700, the service will be free at the start of the trial, which is scheduled to begin on an afternoon flight between seattle and San Jose, Calif., and will run for about 60 days. After a successful trial period, the airline will determine the schedule for rolling out the commercial availability of its wireless Internet service to its entire fleet of aircraft.  more

FCC's T-Mobile Test Shows Movement on Spectrum Sale

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- The Federal Communications Commission next week will take a step toward auctioning off a new block of channels and requiring the winning bidders to offer free Internet. FCC engineers, at the behest of T-Mobile USA, will fly out to the company's lab near seattle to test whether wireless Internet uploads on those airwaves will interfere with T-Mobile's connections.  more

Cingular Wireless To Impose Surcharge On Older Phones

NEW YORK (AP)--About 4.7 million Cingular Wireless subscribers with older phones will have to pay US$5 extra each month as the company tries to prod them to get new handsets so it can devote its entire network to one type of signal.  more
