Mobile Phone Towers Could Help Predict Flash Flooding
Researchers from Tel Aviv University say that they can use mobile phone towers to predict the intensity of weather derived flooding, before it arrives. They said that such a technique could have acted as an early-warning for New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hit the US city. more

UK Theme Park to Ban Smartphones
UK theme park resort, Alton Towers is piloting a "PDA Free Zone" during the May school holiday, to encourage parents to disconnect from the office and reconnect fully with their families. PDA police will be onsite to enforce the ban and any adult caught using a PDA whilst at the Resort will be asked to report to one of five "PDA Drop Off Zones" where they can safely leave their smartphones for the day. more

Mobile Phones Could Detect Radiation from Nuclear Terrorism
Researchers at Purdue University are working with the state of Indiana to develop a system that would use a network of cell phones to detect and track radiation to help prevent terrorist attacks with radiological "dirty bombs" and nuclear weapons. more
