Indonesia's Telkomsel surges forward as rivals falter

The Indonesian market has seen phenomenal growth in recent quarters, but in Q1 09 there was a definite cooling off. The previous seven quarters had seen net additions in excess of 7m, with a peak of 14.94m in Q3 08, but in Q1 09 there was a gain of just 4.47m. This was the lowest figure since Q3 06. The total market reached 144.64m with penetration at 56.8%. Although Annual growth was still impressive at 41.0%, despite falling from 48.2% in the prior twelve-month period, but on a quarterly basis the uplift of 3.2% was the lowest for more than ten years.  more

Indonesia Subscriber Growth Reports Another Record Quarter

The Indonesian market achieved a record figure for quarterly net additions in Q3 08 with an increase of 15.5m, 2m higher than the previous record, which was set in Q2 08. This took the number of connections in Indonesia to 131.64m, with annual growth of 57.1% compared to 47.9% for the prior twelve months.  more

Top 20 Operators in Asia-Pac: Bharti overtakes DoCoMo, India Gains Ground

The mobile markets of the Asia Pacific region continues to grow in importance. In Issue 99, we reported the fact that at the end of September, there were 20 networks in the world with more than 30m customers, of which eight were in this region. Those eight included the two largest - China Mobile and China Unicom - as well as the seventh, eighth, tenth, twelfth, 13th and 20th. Just three months later, there are now 23 networks that have passed the 30m mark and nine of these are now in the AsiaPac region, including four from India. Of the nine, four now have over 50m customers, the other two outside China being Bharti from India and DoCoMo from Japan. Together, the nine have a total of 831m customers, or just under 25% of the global market.  more

Indonesian CDMA Operator Passes 3 Million Subscriber Mark

Indonesian CDMA operator Mobile-8 Telekom has ended 2007 with just over 3m customers, as the number of connections rose by 65% year on year. Mobile-8 launched just over four years ago in December 2003 and has since built a market share of just over 3% in Indonesia, where it competes with three giant operators in the shape of Telkomsel, satelindo and Excelcomindo, as well as new entrant Hutch and two minor players.  more

Asia Pacific Operators in Q3 '07: CDMA staging a revival?

The three months ended September 30th saw a record number of new connections in the Asia Pacific region. Overall, nearly 85 million new customers were connected which is very nearly as many as Germany, Europe's largest economy, has added in the 22 years since mobile service started. The vast majority of these chose to adopt either GSM or WCDMA technology, these two accounting for 66.1m and 9.4m of the total respectively.  more

Indonesian network orders billing solution

Convergys has announced a contract to license Infinys to the Indonesian GSM network operator, satelindo. The Indonesian cellular operator will use Geneva, the Infinys application for rating and billing, with the Infinys application for order management to support satelindo's postpaid services and introduce 2.5G mobile services. more

Indonesian network orders MMSC

Indonesian satelindo says that it has deployed the Tecnomen Multimedia Messaging Service Centre (MMSC) and Voice Mail System (VMS). The VMS supports up to three million subscribers, of which about two million are prepaid customers. more

Indonesian network launches Cashpoint based Top-Ups

Indonesia's satelindo prepaid subscribers can now also use ATMs (Automatic Teller Machines) to reload their prepaid account directly via their bank account. Launched in partnership with some of Indonesia's largest retail banks, BCA (Bank Central Asia) and BII (Bank International Indonesia), users with accounts at these banks can now use ATMs to top up their mobile prepaid accounts in real time. After a successful launch of SMS-based automatic Top Up in April 2002, the ATM channel will further increase the take-up of satelindo's electronic, real-time Top Up service. Electronic Top Up removes the need for mobile users to credit their accounts using traditional voucher-based mechanisms. more

Siemens delivers IN to Indonesia

The Indonesian mobile operator satelindo has selected the Siemens Mobile to supply its Intelligent Networks technology. The project has an order volume of about US$14 million and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2002. Under this contract Siemens mobile is integrating all the hardware and software components required for deployment and administration of Intelligent Networks services (IN) in satelindo's GSM 900/1800 mobile network. On the one hand, this will enable satelindo to administer prepaid customers more efficiently and, on the other, to offer a number of additional new services, such as immediate payment of goods purchased online via mobile phone (Mobile Payment) or mobile banking services (Mobile Banking). more

Indosat increases its holding in Satelindo

Indonesia's Indosat has completed the acquisition of 100% of Bimagraha for US$372 million. Bimagraha is a holding company whose only substantial asset is a 45% shareholding in satelindo. The acquisition of Bimagraha gives Indosat an effective controlling shareholding in satelindo of 75%, although Indosat only holds legal title to 52.5% at this time. more
