SaskTel Signs HSPA Network Sharing Deal with Bell Canada
Canada's sasktel and Bell have entered into a wireless network sharing agreement covering their HSPA network rollouts. sasktel's HSPA network will be initially launched mid-2010 with a targeted completion date of 2011. more

Rogers Leads for Canadian Quarterly Net Subscriber Growth
The Canadian mobile connection market stood at 21.25m at the end of Q3 08, equivalent to a penetration rate of 63.0%. Annual growth has been stable at between 8.2% and 9.0% for the past five quarters and the Q3 08 figure of 8.7% was exactly the same as the year-earlier figure, although given the low penetration level this is not exactly an impressive performance. Perhaps the launch of OrascomĂ's network - scheduled for spring 2009 - will energise what is a decidedly sluggish market. more

Canada's Mobile Penetration Rate Rises to 61.6%
The Canadian mobile market had another quiet quarter, as operators prepared for the 2GHz spectrum auction. This saw most of the available bandwidth going to the three large players, Rogers, Bell and Telus, but no fewer than 12 new entrants acquired licences. In total, the aution raised CA$4.25bn. The new entrants include 9193-2962 Quebec Inc (CA$554m, for Quebec), Globalive Wireless, which paid CA$442m for a national licence, Data & Audio-Visual Enterprises which won licences for Ontario, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Victoria at a cost of CA$243m and Shaw Communications, which paid CA$190m for spectrum in British Colombia, Alberta, Winnipeg, Saskatchewan and northern Ontario. more

Spectrum auction to liven up Canadian mobile market – we hope
CanadaĂ's mobile spectrum auction is now underway with results due in a few weeksĂ' time. The government has set aside 40MHz for new entrants in order to stimulate competition, and judging from the latest results, this is a much-needed move. more

Canada to Hit 20 Million Subscribers, But Still Room for Growth
The Canadian market looks set to reach 20 million customers by the end of the year, having added 0.54 million customers in Q3 to hit 19.54 million at the end of the quarter. Traditionally Q4 is the strongest quarter of the year, so it will be surprising if Canada does not break the 20 million barrier in the current quarter. This impending milestone should not be treated with anything like jubilation, however, since the Canadian market is still extremely underpenetrated by reference to its socio-economic peers, with a rate of just 58.4% at the end of Q3. Since Q3 06, penetration has only risen by 4.2pp, and the total market has grown by just 8.7%. more

Canadian Networks Make Substantial Customer Satisfaction Improvements
Customer satisfaction with contract and prepaid wireless service providers in Canada has increased substantially during the past year, according to a J.D. Power report. They report that sasktel Mobility ranks highest in customer satisfaction among contract service providers, while Virgin Mobile ranks highest among prepaid providers. LG is the highest-ranking mobile phone brand. more

Canadian mobile customers grew 10.9% in the 12 months to 30th September 2006 to reach 17.98m at the end of the period, taking penetration in the market to 54.2%, compared to 49.3% at the end of Q3 last year. GSM was the fastest growing technology with a 23% uplift in customer numbers year on year thanks to its sole Canadian exponent, Rogers. more

SaskTel Mobility and Virgin Mobile Rank Highest in Canadian Customer Satisfaction Study
Canada's sasktel Mobility, a regional operator in Saskatchewan, ranks highest in customer satisfaction with contracted wireless service, while Virgin Mobile, which is new to the Canadian market, ranks highest in pre-paid service, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2005 Canadian Wireless Customer Satisfaction Study. Samsung ranks highest in satisfying customers with wireless handsets. more

Building a CDMA network in Trinidad and Tobago
sasktel International has been awarded a management contract by Laqtel, a Trinidad based investor group, to design, build and operate a US$100 million CDMA network in the Caribbean country of Trinidad and Tobago. Laqtel was successful in the June 23rd spectrum auction and was awarded one of two domestic mobile communications licenses. more

MMS interoperability coming to Canada
Canada's wireless service providers will introduce inter-carrier multimedia message services (MMS) to wireless phone customers across the country from this Friday. Until now, sharing of MMS messages was limited to customers using the same wireless provider. Until now, a customer on a different network would see a Web link on their mobile phone through which they could then view the message from a PC. more
