Nokia Scraps CDMA Phone Tie-up With Sanyo

Nokia Corp. said Thursday it is scrapping its plan for a joint venture with sanyo Electric on mobile phones using CDMA technology, saying the market for this type of phone had got tougher still since the venture was announced in February.  more

Active Matrix Cellphone Displays Continue Market Share Growth

The display market research firm, DisplaySearch has revealed shipments of 274.6 million main displays and 58.6 million sub-displays for mobile phones with total revenues of US$3.3 billion in their Q2'06 market report. Main display shipment share by technology is shown in Table 1. Active Matrix displays are now more than 73% of the total shipments, up from 63.5% one year ago. This trend is expected to continue, and by Q3'06, the Active Matrix share is forecast to reach 78%. more

US Consumers Increasingly Happy with Cellphones

Overall satisfaction among wireless mobile phone owners has increased 4% when compared to 2005, marking the second time customer satisfaction has increased significantly in the past three times the study has been conducted, according to a J.D. Power and Associates report. The study measures satisfaction of customers who have owned their mobile phones for less than two years. Overall satisfaction with wireless handsets is measured based on performance in five key factors. more

Motorola RAZR Still Dominating US Handset Sales

Merrill Lynch has carried out another of its interesting shop visits, taking in 80 stores in 4 USA regions. Following their store visits, they are maintaining their own estimates for handset sales, which do tend to be about 10% above industry expectations. Both Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel are expected to add 1.6 million customers each in Q1, with Cingular picking up 1.2 million and T-Mobile around 950,000 new customers. more

Nokia & Sanyo Venture Successfully Minimizes Cannibalization

In the wake of Nokia and sanyo's announced partnership, Compete analyzed actual shopping behavior across all major carriers to determine the other manufacturers' handsets that shoppers tended to compare against Nokia. Compete found that Nokia shoppers were least likely to cross-consider a sanyo handset - only 9% of Nokia shoppers also evaluated sanyo phones. In contrast, nearly half of Nokia shoppers also considered a Samsung phone. more
