Clearwire Launches Test WiMAX Network in Silicon Valley

­US WiMAX network operator, Clearwire has launched a preview developer network in California's Silicon Valley. The developer network, which is a precursor to commercial service planned for the San Francisco Bay Area in 2010, will cover more than 20 square miles in Santa Clara, Mountain View and parts of downtown Palo Alto, California.  more

Clearwire Launches WiMAX Network in Las Vegas

Clearwire has formally launched its WiMAX network in the Las Vegas region, covering 1.7 million residents across 638 square miles. In addition to the launch of the Clear service, the company also announced that, starting next month, it will offer the Clear 4G+ mobile USB, a dual-mode 4G/3G modem for customers who travel outside of WiMAX coverage areas that roams onto Sprint's nationwide 3G network.  more

Clearwire Launches WiMAX Service in Atlanta City

US WiMAX operator, Clearwire Communications has expanded its network coverage to include Atlanta City. The city is now home to the largest 4G WiMAX wireless broadband network in the United States with CLEAR service available to nearly three million people across approximately 1,200 square miles.  more

Sprint Outlines WiMAX Expansion Programme

USA network, Sprint Nextel has announced the next markets in its WiMAX network rollout. The network is being folded into the national WiMAX network being built by its joint-partner, Clearwire. San Francisco Public Transport to Get Wi-Fi Coverage

Over 400m mobile ticketing users by 2013

New research has forecast that over 400 million mobile subscribers worldwide will use their mobile phones for ticketing by 2013. However, the study concluded that trials and pilots are not being implemented into full mobile ticketing services as quickly as expected for several reasons including bar code reading issues, lack of reader infrastructure and availability of NFC (Near Field Communications) handsets.  more

BART Riders Embrace Paying with Mobile Phones – NFC Trial a Success

Earlier this year a select group of San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) riders took part in a first-in-the-nation trial to pay for their fares and food, receive discounts and check account balances using just their new mobile phone containing a contactless chip that enables transactions without a traditional plastic card. BART, First Data and ViVOtech has published the results of the trial conducted in the San Francisco area from Jan. 28 to May 30, 2008, which demonstrate high use when both transit fare and retail payments are combined in the same phone.  more
