Samsung Wins Kazakhstan Mobile WiMAX Contract

Kazakhstan's Alem Communications has selected samsung Electronics as its exclusive Mobile WiMAX network supplier. Alem Communications via its subsidiary Digital TV launched its first commercial Mobile WiMAX service in Almaty, the economic hub of Kazakhstan on May 1st, after the successful soft launch of the service earlier in March.  more

iPhone: Not a top 20 handset for browsing and buying on the mobile web

According to statistics released by mobile billing and analytics firm, Bango, when it comes to the most popular phones for browsing and buying content on the mobile web worldwide, the iPhone still sits outside the top 20. The Bango Top 20 handset list, based on Bango's February statistics, puts the Nokia 3110c on top, followed by the samsung M800 in 2nd and the Nokia 6300 in 3rd.  more

Financial Crisis Hits Mobile Phone Sales as Q3 Shipment Growth Slows

The worldwide mobile phone industry felt the impact of the global financial crisis in the third quarter of 2008 (3Q08) as total handset shipments were down significantly over previous quarters. Mobile phone manufacturers shipped a total of 299.0 million handsets in 3Q08, up 3.2% from last year, and down -0.4% over 2Q08. The third quarter of the year has historically been a ramp-up quarter as manufacturers load their sales channels with handsets in preparation for the holiday season, producing year-over-year growth rates as high as 20% as a result. This year has not witnessed a similar ramp up, largely due to the current economic situation.  more

Nokia getting on top of handset media portability

Nokia has greatly extended the range of its multimedia codec support in the fifth edition of its S60 platform for Symbian OS, in an effort to overcome the problems of multimedia portability arising from codec proliferation. An important addition to the core is Microsoft's Windows Media Audio (WMA) format, which largely completes Nokia's audio codec support. However, some gaps still remain, notably the DivX Internet video codec and the popular, and free, Ogg family.  more

Young electronics workers reportedly handle chemicals without protective gear. They work inhumane overtime hours to cover basic needs and are punished if they make mistakes.
