Spansion Expands IP Lawsuit Against Samsung

Flash memory vendor, Spansion says that it has added three more patent claims against samsung. The company first initiated action against samsung in November, 2008, with the International Trade Commission (ITC) and the U.S. District Court in Delaware. The judge in the first ITC case has set a target date of mid September to issue his initial determination.  more

Samsung Sells 50 Millionth Full Touch Screen Mobile Phone

samsung Electronics has marked the sale of its 50 millionth full touchscreen mobile phone globally this month. samsung says that it sold approximately 40 million full touch screen devices this year through the end of November, compared with around 10 million in the whole of 2008.  more

Shipments of Cell Phones Return to Growth in Q2

Global shipments of cell phones in the second quarter climbed 4.7 percent compared to the first, marking the first sequential increase for the market since the third quarter of 2008, according to iSuppli Corp. New MVNO for New Zealand

New Zealand telco, Digital Island says that it has signed a MVNO deal with Telecom New Zealand to add mobile phone services to its portfolio. The firm will carry out a two month pilot with existing customers beginning in April, followed by a full commercial service from July.  more

Industry to Settle on a Generic Phone Charger for All Mobile Phones

The GSMA and 17 mobile operators and manufacturers have announced that they are committed to implementing a cross-industry standard for a universal charger for new mobile phones. The aim of the initiative, led by the GSMA, is to ensure that the mobile industry adopts a common format for mobile phone charger connections and energy-efficient chargers resulting in an estimated 50 per cent reduction in standby energy consumption and the potential elimination of up to 51,000 tonnes of duplicate chargers.  more
