Smartphone sales buck the recession

A report by Infonetics Research is forecasting an 8% drop in the total number of mobile phones sold in 2009, to 1.1 billion worldwide (down from 1.2 billion in 2008), in line with predictions from Nokia, among others. Smartphones were the best-performing segment of the mobile phones market in 2008 and the only segment to show unit and revenue growth in the second half of the year as the world economy entered recession.  more

Smartphone Market Share Increased Rapidly Worldwide According to AdMob

Mobile advertising agency, AdMob has reported that despite challenging economic conditions, smartphones continued to gain significant market share worldwide over the past six months, rising from 26 percent to 33 percent of hits to its adserver platform in February 2009.  more

Smart Phones Ring in Healthy Growth in 2009 Despite Mobile Meltdown

Although the outlook for the overall mobile handset market continues to dim, smart phones remain a bright spot with global unit growth as high as 11.1 percent in 2009, iSuppli is predicting. iSuppli's optimistic forecast for global smart phone unit shipments calls for 192.3 million units in 2009, up 11.1 percent from 173.6 million in 2008. A more pessimistic outlook calls for growth of only 6 percent this year, reaching 183.9 million units.  more

Global smart phone shipments rise 28% - Apple Takes #2 Position

Nokia getting on top of handset media portability

Nokia has greatly extended the range of its multimedia codec support in the fifth edition of its S60 platform for Symbian OS, in an effort to overcome the problems of multimedia portability arising from codec proliferation. An important addition to the core is Microsoft's Windows Media Audio (WMA) format, which largely completes Nokia's audio codec support. However, some gaps still remain, notably the DivX Internet video codec and the popular, and free, Ogg family.  more

Open Source OS Assists Chinese Development of the Smart Phone Market

A report from Chinese research firm, CCID Consulting shows that the sales volume of smart phones in China's market in the first half of 2008 reached 15.671 million sets, up 32.1% over H1 2007, and the sales revenue reached 37.74 billion Yuan, up 25.7% over H1 2007.  more
