Fractus Sues Ten Cellphone Manufacturers for Patent Infringement

Ten mobile phone vendors are being sued for allegedly infringing patents relating to internal antennas used on their handsets. Spanish antenna manufacturer, Fractus says that is has sued samsung, LG, RIM, Pantech, Kyocera, Palm, HTC, Sharp, UTStarcom, and Sanyo for infringing nine different patents.  more

Worldwide Mobile Phone Shipments Down by 15.8% in First Quarter

The worldwide mobile phone market began 2009 with an expected sequential downturn, exacerbated by the challenges of the ongoing worldwide recession. According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped a total of 244.8 million units in the first quarter of 2009 (1Q09), approximately 15.8% lower than the 290.8 million units shipped during 1Q08. The first quarter of a new year is typically characterized by seasonally lower shipment volumes following a busy holiday quarter with channels clearing out excess inventory. But the 1Q09 decline was especially sharp due to weak end-user demand, currency volatility, and lack of credit for merchants as consumers and the supply chain adapt to the recession.  more

Mobile Handset Market Stays Afloat with 258 Million Shipped in 1Q-2009

Despite tough corporate and unemployment news making the headlines, the mobile handset-buying public did not head to the hills during the first quarter of 2009. Handset vendors had shipped 258 million handsets by the end of the quarter. Although that represents an 11% year-over-year decline, the result significantly exceeded the previous forecast of 253.5 million. "Green shoots are sprouting," is how ABI Research vice president Jake Saunders describes the latest figures.  more

Worldwide Semiconductor Revenue Down in 2008 - Qualcomm Bucks the Trend

Worldwide semiconductor revenue totaled $255 billion in 2008, down 5.4 percent, or a decrease of $14.5 billion from 2007 revenue, according to the final market share analysis by Gartner. Nokia Smartphone Sales Fall as RIM, Apple, Samsung Take Market Share

In the fourth quarter of 2008, worldwide sales of smartphones to end users reached 38.1 million units, an increase of 3.7 per cent on the fourth quarter of 2007, according to Gartner. Global sales of smartphones for 2008 reached 139.3 million devices, up 13.9 per cent compared with 2007. more

Fitch Revises Outlook to Negative on Samsung & LG Electronics

Fitch Ratings says that it has revised its rating Outlook on samsung Electronics (SEC) and LG Electronics (LGE) to Negative from Stable. At the same time, Hynix Semiconductor's (Hynix) Long-term foreign currency (FC) IDR and senior unsecured debt ratings, which are currently at 'B+', remain on Rating Watch Negative (RWN).  more
