Spansion Expands IP Lawsuit Against Samsung

Flash memory vendor, Spansion says that it has added three more patent claims against samsung. The company first initiated action against samsung in November, 2008, with the International Trade Commission (ITC) and the U.S. District Court in Delaware. The judge in the first ITC case has set a target date of mid September to issue his initial determination.  more

Mobile Phone Shipments Rebound To Double-Digit Growth in Q4

The worldwide mobile phone market grew 11.3% in the fourth quarter of 2009, ending five consecutive quarters of retrenchment. According to IDC's Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 325.3 million units in 4Q09 compared to 292.4 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008. Vendors shipped a total of 1.13 billion units on a cumulative worldwide basis in 2009, down 5.2% from the 1.19 billion units shipped in 2008.  more

Nokia Sues Over Allegations of LCD Display Price Fixing

Nokia has filed lawsuits in the UK and USA against a number of companies, alleging that they operated price-fixing cartels for mobile phone display screens. The lawsuit also includes claims against computer monitor display suppliers, who had sold components to a former Nokia subsidiary, Nokia Display Products.  more

Shipments of Cell Phones Return to Growth in Q2

Global shipments of cell phones in the second quarter climbed 4.7 percent compared to the first, marking the first sequential increase for the market since the third quarter of 2008, according to iSuppli Corp. Worldwide shipments amounted to 265 million units in the second quarter, up from 253 million in the first.  more

Smartphone Growth Encouraging - Cell Phone Market Still Expected To Shrink in 2009

The worldwide mobile phone market recorded another quarter of year-over-year decline in the second quarter of 2009 (2Q09).­ According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, handset vendors shipped a total of 269.6 million units worldwide, down 10.8% from 302.2 million units in 2Q08. The second quarter results are an improvement from the 17.2% decrease seen during 1Q09, but ongoing challenges stemming from the economic crisis remain a factor to watch.  more

Indian telecom equipment beats downturn; grows 20% to nearly $25 billion

The Indian telecom equipment industry reported a 20% growth in revenues to comfortably cross the US$24 billion mark during FY 2008-09 compared to a 24% growth recorded in the previous financial year (2007-08). Indian trade magazine, Voice&Data said that the result was not surprising because despite overall economic slowdown, India has been witnessing over 10 million month-on-month new mobile subscriber additions, and telecom operators have been buying equipment to expand their networks.  more

Global Handset Shipments Fall at Fastest Rate in History during Q1 2009

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global mobile handset shipments fell a huge 13 percent year-over-year, to reach 245 million units in Q1 2009. De-stocking by cautious retailers and a worldwide economic downturn caused handset shipments to fall at their fastest rate in the industry's 27-year history.  more

Smartphone sales buck the recession

A report by Infonetics Research is forecasting an 8% drop in the total number of mobile phones sold in 2009, to 1.1 billion worldwide (down from 1.2 billion in 2008), in line with predictions from Nokia, among others. Smartphones were the best-performing segment of the mobile phones market in 2008 and the only segment to show unit and revenue growth in the second half of the year as the world economy entered recession.  more
