Tier 2 Mobile Handset Vendors Must Compete on Two Fronts

Tier 2 mobile handset vendors shipped 80.5 million units last year, a small fraction of the global total. But they face significant challenges when seeking greater market share. They are competing against the Tier 1 giants of the industry, which together control about 70% of the global market. They are also trying to differentiate themselves and create recognizable brands. According to a new study from ABI Research, the most obvious strategies open to them may not be the best.  more

Mobile Handset Market Stays Afloat with 258 Million Shipped in 1Q-2009

Despite tough corporate and unemployment news making the headlines, the mobile handset-buying public did not head to the hills during the first quarter of 2009. Handset vendors had shipped 258 million handsets by the end of the quarter. Although that represents an 11% year-over-year decline, the result significantly exceeded the previous forecast of 253.5 million. "Green shoots are sprouting," is how ABI Research vice president Jake Saunders describes the latest figures.  more

Despite the Naysayers WiMAX Subscriber Revenue Will Boom in 2009

Any reader who believed all the recent headlines would feel confident that the WiMAX market is being crushed by LTE. Nortel has left the WiMAX market and Alcatel-Lucent has "backed off" from WiMAX; and these developments supposedly dealt a blow to Clearwire, which had so far chosen neither as an infrastructure vendor. But that's not quite the whole story.  more

Survey Finds: 17% of Shoppers Spent Over $100 on Mobile Apps in 2008

A survey of 235 US smartphone users who installed applications on their devices in 2008, conducted by ABI Research in November, reveals that a surprising 16.5% spent between $100 and $499. That level of spending is especially significant given the low cost of most mobile applications, ranging from as little as a dollar or two at Apple's iPhone App Store, to at most about $25.  more
