Safaricom Full-Year Profits Drop 23%

Kenya's safaricom has seen a twenty-three percent fall in its full year profits to Kshs 10.54 billion (US$136 million), from Kshs 13.85 billion (US$179 million) in the last fiscal year. The company said that the drop was due to increased depreciation in line with the increased capital investment. Revenues however were up by 14.8% to Kshs 70.5 billion (US$910 million).  more

Safaricom Subscriber Base Up - Market Share Down

Kenya's safaricom has reported that its subscriber base has risen by 11.2 percent during the second half of 2008, although it lost market share to new entrants into the market. safaricom said it had 13.3 million subscribers and its market share has fallen to 77 percent from 81 percent at the end of September, when it had 12 million customer.  more

Safaricom Subscriber Base Jumps 50% in Six Months

Kenyan mobile operator, safaricom has reported that it subscriber base rose over the six months to October by 50.3% over prior year position of 7.956 million to 11.956 million - while turnover increased by 20% compared to September 2007 to Kshs 34.5 billion (US$469 million).  more

Safaricom Launches HSDPA Service in Kenya

Kenya's largest mobile operator, safaricom has launched a HSDPA upgrade on its network in the coastal city of Mombassa - offering speeds up to 72.Mbps. The company said that it has invested Sh1.8 billion (US$27.5 million) on the network upgrade.  more

Safaricom Shares Surge As Trading Starts in Nairobi

Shares in the massively oversubscribed safaricom floatation soared when trading opened this morning on the Nairobi Stock Exchange. Share were sold to domestic investors at 5 shillings each (with 5.5 shillings for overseas investors) and jumped by 45 percent to reach 7.4 shillings by lunchtime - having at one point reached 8 shillings during the mornings trade.  more

Safaricom Reports 16% Jump in Full-Year Profits

Kenya's safaricom has reported a 16 percent jump in full year profits to Sh13.9 billion ($223.7 million) as its declared subscriber base jumped by two-thirds. Pretax profit came in at Sh19.9 billion ($321 million). Sales jumped to Sh61.4 billion, from Sh47.5 billion as subscriber numbers rose by 68 percent to 10.2 million at the end of March 2008.  more

Safaricom Floatation Massively Oversubscribed

Preliminary figures from the sale of shares in Kenya's safaricom has pulled in some Sh191 billion (US$3.3 billion) in bids from local and international investors - substantially exceeding the expected Sh50 billion (US$845 million) that government had hoped to raise.  more

Kenya's Safaricom Subscriber Base "inflated" by Inactive Users

A close study of the tender document for the privatization of Kenya's safaricom has exposed an oddity in the claimed subscriber numbers. The prospectus says in a footnote on page 53 that at the end of last year, the company had 9.2 million subscribers, consisting of 9.1 million and 113.5 thousand prepaid and postpaid subscribers respectively - compared to 2.1 million for its nearest competitor, Celtel.  more
