Kenya's Safaricom Buys WiMAX Network Operator
Kenya's safaricom says that it has signed an agreement to buy local WiMAX operator, Packet Stream Data Networks for an undisclosed amount. The intended acquisition comes on the back of safaricom's recent appointment of Jamii Telecommunications as its preferred partner in the rollout of it optical fibre network. more

Kenya's safaricom says that it has received an international gateway licence, which it expects will result in a substantial fall in prices of international calls by the mobile service provider. Kenya to offer 3rd GSM license
Kenya is to offer a third GSM license, to compete with the incumbents safaricom Kenya and KenCell Communications. The Communications Commission of Kenya has invited experienced operators of mobile telecommunications systems to participate in a prequalification process, which will result in the award of a nation-wide GSM900/1800 licence. more

The mobile phone element of the implementation of Lithuania's National Telephone Numbering Plan has started. Number dialing procedure has resulting changes to cellphone dialing codes, and the code series 281, 285, 289, 299 have now changed to 681, 685, 689, 699. The old codes will still work until September 1st 2002. more
