Zain Kenya Applies for 3G License

Kenya's Safaricom Buys WiMAX Network Operator

Kenya's safaricom says that it has signed an agreement to buy local WiMAX operator, Packet Stream Data Networks for an undisclosed amount. The intended acquisition comes on the back of safaricom's recent appointment of Jamii Telecommunications as its preferred partner in the rollout of it optical fibre network.  more

Vodafone Reported to Have Brought Out Controversial Shareholder

It has been reported by local media that Vodafone has brought out its controversial minority shareholder in its Kenyan subsidiary. The Daily Nation newspaper reported that Vodafone may have paid as much as Sh6 billion (US$100 million) for the stake in its local holding company held by Mobitelea.  more

Safaricom Full-Year Profits Drop 23%

Kenya's safaricom has seen a twenty-three percent fall in its full year profits to Kshs 10.54 billion (US$136 million), from Kshs 13.85 billion (US$179 million) in the last fiscal year. The company said that the drop was due to increased depreciation in line with the increased capital investment. Revenues however were up by 14.8% to Kshs 70.5 billion (US$910 million).  more

Kenya's Subscriber Growth Reaches 40% in 2008

The Kenyan market saw some major developments in the second half of 2008: in Q3, fixed operator Telkom Kenya launched a mobile network, and in the last quarter of the year, Econet Wireless finally managed to get up and running, more than five years after it was first awarded a licence. At the end of 2008, there were 15.90m mobile customers in Kenya. Annual net additions stood at 4.55m, up from 4.08m a year earlier, but proportionate growth fell from 56.0% to 40.1%. Fourth-quarter net additions increased from 0.65m in Q4 07 to 1.37 in Q4 08.  more

Econet Denies MTN Interest in Kenyan Network

Econet Wireless Kenya, which trades under the Yu brandname, has refuted local media reports that South Africa's MTN has offered US$450 for a stake in the company. The reports are "rumors," Chief Executive Officer Srinivasa Iyengar told reporters in Nairobi. The story emerged in Kenya's Standard newspaper.  more
