Packet One Gets Permission to Expand WiMAX Coverage
Malaysian WiMAX network operator, Packet One (P1) says that it has received the necessary approvals to also roll out its WiMAX service in East Malaysia. The permission was granted after the operator met its regulatory requirment of 25% population coverage within the Peninsula. more

Malaysian WiMAX Operators Warned to Improve Coverage
Malaysia's government has warned WiMAX operators that it has the power to revoke their operating licenses if they do not meet minimum coverage requirements by the end of this year. The country's Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said that all companies responsible for providing wireless services must achieve a 25% broadband penetration by the end of this year, and up to 50% by the end of next year. more

Motorola Powers the First WiMAX Network in East Malaysia
Malaysia's REDtone has launched East Malaysia's first WiMAX broadband services, initially covering the Kota Kinabalu business district - and powered by Motorola equipment. Motorola is working with REDtone to supply and deploy WiMAX 2.3GHz equipment at base sites and install customer premises equipment (CPE) to provide broadband services in major business districts in the first phase of the plan. more

Malaysian Minister Calls for Less Youth Text Messaging
Malaysia's Assistant Youth and Sports Minister Jahid Jahid has called on the country's youth to cut back on "aimless" text messages and engage in more "meaningful" activities. Malaysian operator outlines expansion plans
Malaysia's GSM network operator, Maxis says that it will invest some US$53 million within these two years to expand its network coverage in East Malaysia. The company expects to construct some 500 cell sites, about 290 of which are in sabah and Labuan, and the rest in Sarawak to improve existing coverage, maintain its leadership in providing GPRS coverage and cover new areas including those with low population density. more
