Rwandan Networks in Dispute over Unpaid Interconnection Fees

MTN Rwandacell has expressed concerns over delays by rival network operator, rwandatel to pay wh­at it claims is an outstanding debt accrued from interconnection fees. An unnamed source at MTN told The New Times newspaper that rwandatel owes approximately Rwf 4 billion (US$6.6 million) and has repeatedly failed to pay the outstanding invoices. Interconnection fees are supposed to be settled at the end of each month.  more

Rwandatel Misses Subscriber Growth Target

Rwandan mobile operator, rwandatel says that it missed its subscriber target for the first half of this year by 30%, but said that its market share had risen by 15%. According to company officials, rwandatel had set a first half subscription target of 600,000 clients but managed only slightly above 420,000 active subscribers on June 30.  more

APA-Kigali (Rwanda) Rwanda's oldest telecommunication operator, rwandatel, Friday launched the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and 3G network for its mobile telephone, replacing its CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) platform, as it prepares for a cut-throat competition with MTN Rwanda, its main challenger.  more

Rwanda Awards 3rd Mobile License to Millicom

Millicom International Cellular says that it has won the license to operate Rwanda's third mobile phone network. Millicom will hold 87.5% of the equity in a newly created joint venture company in partnership with Marathon Corporation, an established local company with numerous business interests in Rwanda. The joint venture will pay US$60 million for the 15 year license.  more
