Roshan Deal to Lease Capacity on Afghan Telecom Network
Afghanistan based mobile network operator, roshan has signed a deal with Afghan Telecom to access its National Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) Backbone Ring Network. The OFC, constructed by Afghan Telecom, will complement roshan's existing infrastructure, enabling roshan to ensure the redundancy of its network and provide additional capacity for its growing number of subscribers. more

Afghanistan Sees Record Quarterly Net Subscriber Growth
The Afghan market looks set to have reached 10m customers by the end of Q2 09, having finished Q1 with 9.29m. Quarterly net additions stood at an all-time record of 1.33m, more than double the 0.58m recorded in Q1 08. Annual net additions also a hit a record high of 3.89m. On a proportionate basis, annual growth stood at just under 72.0%, down from 95.9% in the prior twelve-month period. However, this was higher than the 66.7% and 65.1% recorded in Q3 08 and Q4 08 respectively, and it could therefore herald a resurgence in growth, which has fallen steeply since reaching a high of 139.8% in Q3 07. more

Afghanistan - Total Market Grows to 6.7 Million Customers
The battle for market leadership in Afghanistan took another twist in Q3 08, with roshan regaining first place from Afghan Wireless. The latter first took the lead in Q4 07, although it was ahead by just 3k customers; however, this advantage increased to 130k at the end of Q1 08. roshan fought back in Q2 08, narrowing the deficit to 30k, and Q3 08 saw it surge ahead with 2.34m customers to 2.20m for Afghan Wireless. more

Asian Bank to Boost Rural GSM Service in Afghanistan
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is to provide a US$55 million loan to the Afghanistan based mobile operator, roshan so it can extend its coverage to parts of the country that have little or no telecommunications infrastructure in place. The loan to Telecom Development Company Afghanistan, which trades under the name roshan, will also support the rollout of a mobile banking system called M-Paisa. more

Afghan Phone Company Signs 2 Millionth Subscriber
Afghanistan based roshan says that it has reached 2 million active subscribers. The firm, which began operations in July 2003, as the second GSM provider in Afghanistan, before any basic telecommunications infrastructure was established, is now present in over 224 cities and towns and in 33 of 34 provinces, covering almost 56% of the population. The company says that it has invested over US$338 million on building out its network. more
