North America Q3 - GSM customer numbers top 100m

GSM customer numbers in North America topped 100m in early September to reach 100.52m by the end of the third quarter, 1.97m up over the three months. Connections to networks operating using the global standard have more than doubled in number over the last three years, having stood at just under 50m at the end of Q3 2004. Over that time-frame GSM has been without doubt the fastest growing technology in the North American market; however, over the last year it has in fact been the slowest growing. In the year to 30th September, GSM customer numbers rose by 9.7%, which is the lowest ever recorded growth rate for the technology, and the first time the annual figure has dropped below 10%.  more

Both of the major countries - Russia and the USA - are themselves divided into regions and sub-regions for the purposes of telecommunications licensing. This means that both markets are made up of national, or near-national operators, regional players and some local businesses of such insignificance that, for once, they slip below our radar. more

Inter-carrier SMS comes to Canada

Four of Canada's cellular networks, Bell Mobility, Microcell, rogers AT&T Wireless and TELUS Mobility have joined forces to develop inter-carrier SMS services. CMG Wireless Data Solutions has been selected to provide the technology for the service. Many cellular phones sold today in Canada support SMS, but the service is currently limited as customers can only communicate between customers on the same network. To overcome this limitation, the four major wireless operators will enable both origination and termination of SMS between their respective wireless networks. This enhanced functionality will be available to all text messaging subscribers of these four carriers, coast-to-coast. more
