Canada Q1 2009 - Even more sluggish than usual
Canadian mobile penetration continued to languish below 65% in the first quarter of 2009, with an end-quarter rate of 64.6%. This was up 4.0pp year on year but just 0.4pp in the quarter. As this suggests, Q1 09 saw less than impressive growth, with just 176.6k net additions. This was only the third quarter in the past 10 years to see sub-200k growth. Given that this poor performance comes on the back of the first Q4 since 1990 not to record the peak growth of the year, the Canadian market seems to have been hit harder than most by the global economic downturn. more

Rogers Leads for Canadian Quarterly Net Subscriber Growth
The Canadian mobile connection market stood at 21.25m at the end of Q3 08, equivalent to a penetration rate of 63.0%. Annual growth has been stable at between 8.2% and 9.0% for the past five quarters and the Q3 08 figure of 8.7% was exactly the same as the year-earlier figure, although given the low penetration level this is not exactly an impressive performance. Perhaps the launch of OrascomÃ's network - scheduled for spring 2009 - will energise what is a decidedly sluggish market. more

No sign of wireless downturn in North America yet
Independent Analyst Comment - Steven Hartley, Senior Analyst at Ovum
North America was the first region to be affected by the current economic
crisis and, to date, has been the hardest hit. Although the full effects of the
downturn are yet to be felt, the wireless operatorsÃ' results in the third
quarter reflect how mobile services have become indispensable and two-year
contracts are protecting the sector in the region. Mobile telecom remains on
track to grow in the region in 2009.
